Biography
Matteo Bizzotto was born in 1978 just a few kilometers from a Padua on the brink of explosion, amid revolutionary impulses, record-breaking trials, and armed ideologies. In the province, however, everything shines and grows like an anarcho-capitalist monster during those infamous years of development—years that no one would ever experience again. At 14, Matteo is inevitably drawn to punk. Driven daily by the urgent need to form a group of people who destroy to rebuild, he faces a journey marked by a lengthy evolution, shifts in the lineup, strained friendships, crucial listening experiences, and fortuitous meetings. MASTICA was created with the vision of a band that could break away from the mainstream trends of the late 90s, driven by passion despite limited resources. They started with a foundation of Proto-hard Psychedelic Rock and embraced an innovative approach. Their music is distinguished by a unique mix of mod and beatnik sensibilities, enriched with blues influences and 60s psychedelic sounds.
Over the years, Mastica has established a distinct presence in the independent music scene. Their retro-inspired tracks radiate a punk sensibility and showcase unconventional lyrics that explore themes of love, conflict, personal growth, and friendship. Using Hammond organs, Mellotron, psychedelic guitars, and compelling rhythms, their Italian-language songs have gained recognition beyond Italy, resonating in Spain, England, Germany, and Sweden.
After recording a series of demos and self-produced singles, Mastica released their debut studio album, (12) Treize Cigarettes, between 2003 and 2004. This collection of their early work was released on CD by Nicotine Records in 2004. The album was followed by the single Uomini in 2005, and later by Restyling in 2006, released by Teen Sound Records. Additionally, in 2006, they put out Bitt in Garage, a compilation of demos and unreleased tracks, also through Teen Sound Records.
On stage, Mastica reveals its true essence—a dynamic blend of untamed energy and meticulously orchestrated chaos, characterized by a bluesy and infectious spirit. Their performances are raw and intense, offering a truly unique experience. In 2024, they are marking the 20th anniversary of their remarkable debut with a remastered vinyl edition, released by Go Down Records. It's an essential addition for any fan!
